Portico - Prepped To Believe

Welcome to the Creation Museum.

The amorphic architecture composing the outside of the building is carried into the Portico. A large foyer with tinted glass windows covering the outside walls from top to bottom and a massive wall of faux rock complete with Grand Canyonesque striations makes up the inside wall. Entering the Portico you feel like you've entered the inner sanctum of a high tech fortress; the feeling is not one of complete closure, but is still unnerving. Images of the so called 7 C's pop up along the walls with some stunning artwork. The area screams sophistication, and if you ever doubted that this museum could be taken seriously, all doubting dissolves away in this room. Well organized ticket windows, authentic dinosaur bones, and an old planetarium projector retired by the US military further bolster the museum credibility.

If you weren't prepared to believe when you came in, consider this area their attempt at ensuring you are.

Main Hall - Fantasy Land

A hodge-podge of fantasy inspired imagery dominates the Main Hall. Children can have their picture taken on a saddled triceratops that looks as if it came right out of the mythical land of Dinotopia. Medieval wall sconces light the entry way to the main hall and a faux door you almost expect Harry Potter to walk through fills an uncommon empty space on the adjoining wall. The Main Hall provides access to the museum's Noah's Cafe and the Dragonhall Bookstore whose entrance is guarded by an imposing dragon reminiscent of those pictured in Dragonology. Boy and girl mannequin's clad in caveman style clothes sit peacefully at the edge of a lagoon, think Blue Lagoon. The girl is feeding a squirrel a carrot while friendly dinosaurs roam in the background.

You might expect such a fantasy filled space to be over the top, but the designers of the Creation Museum have made the space feel like such a world is at least plausible and, more importantly, desirable. The vast open space filled with gorgeous scenery, friendly dinosaurs, and happy children creates an atmosphere of fantasy and wonder so inviting that you'll be tempted to drop your guard, suspend your disbelief, and allow yourself to be taken along for a ride.

Be forewarned, danger lurks up ahead.
